Overview
A leading engineering and infrastructure organisation within the renewable energy sector is seeking a Grid Design Engineer to join its expanding design team based in Tralee. This role will focus on the delivery of grid connection solutions for renewable and power generation projects across the Republic of Ireland.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical design, assessment and optimisation of electrical grid connections, ensuring compliance with Irish grid requirements, safety standards and best engineering practice. You will work closely with internal project teams and external stakeholders to deliver robust, compliant and cost-effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop grid connection strategies for renewable energy developments including wind, solar and battery storage
Produce electrical drawings such as single-line diagrams, schematics and equipment layouts
Carry out power system studies including load flow, fault level and protection coordination using industry software
Engage with grid authorities and network operators to progress applications and secure grid connection approvals
Provide technical support throughout planning, permitting and construction phases
Identify technical risks and contribute to mitigation strategies
Ensure all designs comply with relevant health, safety and environmental requirements
Support multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project delivery
Key Requirements
Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering (Master’s level desirable)
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in grid design, transmission/distribution networks or renewable energy projects
Strong working knowledge of Irish grid codes, standards and connection processes
Experience using power system analysis software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory or ETAP
Understanding of HV and MV substations, protection schemes and network infrastructure
Exposure to renewable energy integration and battery storage systems
Knowledge of SCADA systems and grid automation is an advantage
Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills
Ability to work collaboratively within a project-driven environment
